1.What is your full name, the company you work for and your position within the company?
Linda Sage MA, BA Ed (Hons) – Successful Mindset Ltd. – www.lindasage.com – Owner
2.In what ways does the company you work for accommodate for graduates?
I have graduates work with me in a variety of fields, gaining hands-on expertise in business, work ethics and self-development. I have worked with many young people on the technology side, website, SEO, marketing, audio and video recording and editing, because they all know more than me!
I also have graduates work along with me to arrange and promote events for book launches, speaking events or coaching sessions, in person and online.
3.What is the current market like for internships, long-term careers and other opportunities? Please describe.
At the moment, there is not a secure opportunity for an internship; but as the business is now growing internationally, and the need for more concentrated B2B marketing and a social networking presence is needed, there may well be an opportunity very soon.
For graduates, getting into smaller businesses offers a wealth of opportunities and knowledge, it also means that they are secure in the business as it grows.
4.Do you have any advice you can give to the current graduate market in your field?
My personal working field is psychology and education; though since starting this business, I have learnt a lot about marketing, promoting, customer service and entrepreneur mindset. As well as technical skills, I think you can gain great knowledge just by getting out around the networking groups, offering more mature entrepreneurs your services on the internet and view of the world. This is a unique selling point for young people; learn from others, use their experience and find your own pathway.
When I graduated, the first time – I thought I had a ticket to everlasting employment; and I learnt very early on; that is not always the case. Life gives you experiences that cannot be bought, or taught; they have to be experienced and learnt. Learn to budget your money and your time; be proactive and persistent, nothing is gained by feint heart and all to be lost by procrastination and self-doubt.
The working world now is an amazing place to be; a bottomless pit of opportunities. There I not just one path or one way, you can still get to your goals and dreams, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey as well. Be a sponge and learn flexible skills that cross over many fields, you just never know where they may lead.
5.Do you have any tips for students studying in your area of expertise?
My area of psychology, writing, mentoring, and changing peoples’ lives, is hard when you are young, as you do not have the wealth of years behind you. Get a good mentor, one who is a few steps up the ladder from where you want to be, then you both will grow and climb. It is not an expense, it is an investment.
I worked in a prison straight from university, that was tough all the prisoners were older than me and gaining respect was hard; but it can be done. You can open the door by choosing to work alongside others and protect yourself. There are thousands of teachers, nurses, doctors, scientists, accountants and vets going to work with huge debts, working stupid workloads and burning out very young. Looking after yourself is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
Don’t get greedy, bitter or egotistical, financial wealth is a good goal, but a balanced, productive and happy life has much more value. Don’t chase the money, it will come to you; when you become the person that others want to do business with or employ. Don’t be afraid to say no, if it is not right for you; don’t accommodate “good enough.” Give everything you do, your full attention and 100% effort, even if you are not that good at it. Your dedication will not go unnoticed.
6.Any final words/inspirations for students and graduates in relation to the world of work?
Choose your attitude; it will change your life. Don’t be the whiner round the water cooler, be open to learning, be honest in what you know and don’t know get sucked into choosing sides.
You will have negative and positive people around you, either way, you will start to be like them, choose well.
You have a worth as a person, which is not your knowledge, ability or behaviour; but for others to value you; you must value yourself. Keeping your word to yourself is as important as keeping your word to others.
Accept compliments gracefully and evaluate criticism carefully, remember you can only change for you; not for somebody else; or on behalf of anyone else. There is always a choice; you may not like the choices, but there is a choice. Maintain your personal accountability and responsibility, they will help you achieve and attain all that you want to be, do and have.
At any age there are no guarantees of a tomorrow, so make today your best day yet, don’t go to sleep on harsh words or an argument, tell all those that you love, how you feel often. Be your own best asset and not a liability.
Only you have to live with your conscience if your heart and mind are at peace; you are living well. Don’t wait for others to congratulate you, give yourself a pat on the back, praise others when they deserve it, even for small things, good manners; cost nothing, but go a long way.
Don’t wait for the right time, make it the right time, look for opportunity and you will find it even in the most unexpected places.
Most importantly live your life, on a want to, choose to, like to, love to basis and nothing is a chore, everything is a choice.
