Why is gaining work experience so important?
Let TheGrad explain. Doing work experience in different industries is so important for your general knowledge, and it is best to start as early as possible. If you feel unsure about your destiny and chosen career path, then gaining work experience will allow you to understand the pros and cons of many businesses. It will give you a taste of what it is like to work as a ‘Marketing Assistant’ for example or as a ‘Social media manager’. By trying out new things and experiencing life; you are learning. You are on the road of discovery. And guess what? Eventually, you will stumble on the right answer and find the right path for you.
So, how do you land your first job when most companies expect you to already have experience in the chosen field?
Gain experience by…
Opting for an internship. A lot of students have to complete at least one internship as part of an undergraduate degree, however, a lot of graduates tend to apply for internships now too. This is because they are a fantastic way of getting ‘your foot through the door’. Instantly you will be exposed to hands-on experience doing the sort of work you intend to do in the long run. Internships often lead to a job at the company and if not, then don’t worry as the experience can be included on your CV.
Volunteering. There are several non-profit organisations all across the country that are always looking for new volunteers. Gain work experience in an organisaation voluntarily and gain valuable insight, so very worthwhile for your CV and personal development. A lot of companies like to know that the candidate has volunteered, as it shows respectable qualities about the person.
Networking. Collaborating with others at events is a great way to get noticed. Talk to people as much as you can and share your interests. Every interaction you have with someone new has the potential to foster you a new relationship with a person in your career field. Check local events and ones all over the country, be willing to travel, put the effort in and build your contacts.
Freelancing. Sometimes it is a good idea to prove that you can do the work before you get officially hired. Freelancing is a great way to reach out and become liked by many employers, as it shows that you are using your initiative and show a willingness to work. In the process, you will gain a positive reference and of course, build on your knowledge and experience in a particular field. Prove that you are dependable, dependable enough to hire.
